Sustainable production

Why Gmund paper is good for the environment

We have been producing sustainable paper from plant fibres since 1829. Our production in Gmund am Tegernsee conserves resources and nature. Thanks to new technologies and processes, Gmund Papier is constantly improving and becoming more environmentally friendly.

We take responsibility

At Gmund Papier, we not only have a wide variety of papers in our range, but also a large number of sustainable solutions in our production.

Our mission is to shape the future of the paper industry through continuous research and development and to make a positive contribution to our children and our environment.

Gmund is environmentally conscious

Energy – homemade

Up to 75% of our electrical energy comes from our own renewable sources such as hydropower, solar energy and combined heat and power generation. We only purchase energy with a green electricity certificate.

Water – economical

Fresh water consumption is constantly being reduced. Thanks to a globally unique ozone purification system, the water is treated without chemicals and reused up to eight times before it reaches the sewage treatment plant.

Raw materials – sustainable

Gmund paper is made from plant fibres, a renewable raw material that can be recycled up to seven times, creating raw material for new paper. We are also conducting successful research into alternative fibres for paper production.

Recycling – consistently

Consistent pre-consumer recycling of our colour-sorted production waste turns waste into a valuable raw material in a purely physical process, which can be reused here on site.

Water moves us

The Mangfall river flows right next to the paper mill. It supplies a lot of energy for our paper machines, so that we can generate 75 per cent of our electricity ourselves. At the end of our road is Lake Tegernsee, where we relax and unwind. This makes us aware of our responsibility for water and the environment every day. A task that we take so seriously that we sometimes get into the water ourselves.

The water in the Mangfall has drinking water quality. The Mangfall valley is the largest supplier of drinking water for the metropolis of Munich. It goes without saying that Gmund Papier does not release any substances into the water, the environment or the air.

Waste does not end up in the bin

Recycling without chemicals and transport costs. Our production waste is collected and reprocessed into fresh paper pulp. For new Gmund paper. Yellow to yellow and red to red!

More sparkle!

Here we conjure up lustre on Gmund paper. How we do this has been our secret since Ludwig Kohler invented the process in 1974. We can only reveal this much: On the one hand, it is the light calculation, because only Gmund refines embossed papers with metallic pigments so that the light can refract at many different angles. Secondly, it is the large quantity of high-quality pigments that we use. And last but not least, it is our experience, coupled with the drive to keep improving.

Our centrepiece for more shine is a new coating system. An almost completely new system was developed and built under the motto wider, faster, better. In typical Gmund fashion, sustainability was considered right from the planning stage. An existing drying cylinder from 1925 serves as the main dryer of the high-tech system. The building of the system was renovated to make it more energy-efficient and all technical equipment and systems were optimised in terms of energy efficiency.

How C2C® Certified Silver shines

Metallic Gmund papers shine with beauty and certified recyclability.

These collections are C2C® Certified Silver and therefore tested for material health, recyclability, renewable energy, water management and social standards:

Gmund Colors Metallic, Gmund Creativ System and the book cover material f-color.

Expansion for sustainability

The Cartonnerie Jean FG paper mill in the heart of France has been part of Gmund Papier since 2022. We are thus expanding our capacities for ecological cartonboard qualities made from 100% recycled paper and deepening our expertise in forward-looking solutions made from alternative raw materials.
