Gmund. The Gmund Award 2024 was ceremoniously presented on September 19, 2024, at the location of Gmund Papier at lake Tegernsee. In front of around 400 guests, the winners received their awards from owner Florian Kohler on stage.
A jury, consisting of external and internal industry experts, selected winners in eight categories. Out of a total of 289 submissions, around 200 were nominated. Three projects in each category reached the finals and were presented on stage. Florian Kohler then announced one winner per category:
Winner in the Category Private
The print project “The Round Window Marriage Certificate” a wedding stationery product is the worthy winner. Japanese artist Orikasa Mai impressed the jury with her creative and exceptional use of paper. The greeting cards, made from the Gmund Colors Matt collection, create a variety of shapes and colors when arranged in a wooden frame. The design is precise, and the attention to detail transforms the papers into a design object that not only has emotional value but also serves as a fascinating work of art. The papers were processed with a cutting plotter and laser printing. From the idea to the paper selection and perfect execution, this submission stands out with a particularly harmonious overall composition.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Orikasa Mai for the wedding stationery “The Round Window Marriage Certificate.”
Winner in the Category Book
In the Book category, the work “San Francesco. The Saint from Assisi” created for the Diözesan Museum of Freising in Germany, won the jury’s favor. The jury appreciated the book for its creative concept, its coherent matte gold hot foil stamping on the Gmund Colors collection, and the special processing of Gmund hemp paper. Made from additional Gmund materials, the Gmund Colors and Gmund Blocker collections offer an extremely innovative design. The interior surprises just as much as the impressive cover. The modern and creative approach to the demanding religious theme, along with the successful mix of text, images, typography, and materials, was particularly remarkable to the jury.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Diözesan Museum Freising for the book project “San Francesco. The Saint from Assisi.”
Winner in the Category Business
The highest score in the Business category was awarded to the print project by Wiesendanger medien GmbH. For the Association of the VDMB, the printing house created an ambitious annual magazine titled “Starkmacher.” Various Gmund papers were used: Gmund Cotton, Gmund Bauhaus Dessau, and Gmund Lakepaper Extra. The jury was impressed by the complexity of the different embossing techniques, material processing, and printing. The magazine’s “strong” concept particularly resonated, as its design engages the viewer through surprising elements and perfectly reflects the motto “Starkmacher.” The successful combination of special effects and a clear message highlights the magazine. As part of a new brand concept, this project has significant business relevance and represents a commercially successful product made from Gmund paper.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Wiesendanger medien GmbH for the print project “Starkmacher VDMB Annual Magazine 2023.”
Winner in the Category Mailing
In first place in the Mailing category, the jury selected the Italian processor Made sas for its mailing for the globally renowned packaging fair Les Places d’Or. The experts praised the innovative and unique presentation. The folded mailing creates action, movement, and surprise for the viewer. The excellent use of the Gmund Colors Matt and Gmund Action collections, combined with various hot foil stampings, impressed the jury members, as did the high-quality processing of the paper. The print project is so valuable that one wouldn’t want to throw it away, achieving the desired sustainable effect of a B2B mailing.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Made sas for the print mailing “Invitation Les Places d’Or.”
Winner in the Category Art
The jury awarded the Art category to the art project “Quallen/Jellyfish” by artist Matthias Erhardt from the Tegernsee region. The extraordinary format and unusual printing technique fascinated the jury members. Unique colorful pieces are created on large sheets of Gmund paper using hand-cut and single-use linoleum plates. The artist used various Gmund papers and leftover rolls. This ingenuity, creativity, and particularly the technically complex execution earned the highest points from the experts.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Matthias Erhardt for the art project “Quallen/Jellyfish.”
Winner in the Category Packaging
In the Packaging category, the new packaging concept from the German company Leica Camera AG impressed the jury members. For their new packaging “Home of Leica Cameras” the brand uses Gmund Bauhaus Dessau paper, which features a fine dotted embossing structure and a natural protective coating. The band for the packaging also uses the Gmund Used collection with a natural matte finish. The classic, high-quality processing and design of the Gmund material are simple and modern, reflecting the elegant language of the company’s products. The packaging captivates with its tactile experience and the visually elaborate folding box. With its complex design, the box serves as a new home for all types of cameras. This consistent transition of a renowned brand to a new material left a lasting impression on the experts.
And the Gmund Award goes to: Leica Camera AG for “The New Leica Camera Packaging.”
Winner in the Additional Category Green Innovation
In the additional category Green Innovation, innovative concepts that answer the question “How can we operate sustainably with paper products?” are awarded. The Gmund Award in the Green Innovation category this year goes to Paper & Tea GmbH from Germany for their groundbreaking project in collaboration with Gmund: the development of a tea paper for packaging and corporate communication. In this case, wood pulp is replaced with tea waste from Paper & Tea’s own production. The product made from tea paper impressed the jury with its practicality and sustainable usage. The completely neutral box for the Advent calendar made from tea paper can be reused by customers, contributing further to resource conservation. This commitment to sustainable solutions and creative implementation rounded out the overall concept and delighted the jury.
And the Green Innovation Award goes to: Paper & Tea GmbH for “Tea for Tomorrow – Advent Calendar.”
Winner in the Additional Category Gmund Color of the Year 2024
Every year, Gmund Papier creates impressive and individual colors in natural fibers at the request of our customers. If our customers do not find the right option among our 50 colors from the Gmund Creative System, we produce a custom color starting from 3000 kg orders. Our experts have observed projects throughout the year, and the color from LOTTE Department Store in Korea particularly captivated the jury. The envelope and cards for the “AVENUEL membership card & envelope” feature an intense, deep, and modern purple. Combined with a tone-on-tone hot foil printing technique, the details and creativity of the print project convinced the jury to award the additional prize Gmund Color of the Year 2024.
