Sustainability at the Core: Upcycling Instead of Disposal
The collaboration with PAPER & TEA began with a clear vision: to avoid treating unavoidable tea residues from production as waste and instead reintegrate them into the circular economy. Through this project, we transform dried tea residues into high-quality paper containing 10% tea content. This initiative is a prime example of creative circular economy, showcasing how sustainable product design can merge resource conservation with innovation. The visible tea residues give each sheet a distinctive structure and appearance – a one-of-a-kind creation that tells a story of both history and vision. Already, this paper is being used for exclusive products such as advent calendars, business cards, and menus.

Since 1829, Gmund Papier has stood for excellent paper production at Lake Tegernsee. Sustainability is an integral part of our DNA. Through modern technologies, energy-efficient processes, and comprehensive recycling, we set new standards in papermaking. Each sheet of Gmund Papier contains around 20% pre-consumer recycled material.
Our Greenfibra Labs – an innovation lab for sustainable packaging solutions – plays a key role in developing the new tea paper. Here, we research the integration of alternative plant fibers and the reduction of waste in paper production.
