Gmund Papier and buchexklusiv
With buchexklusiv GmbH, an agency specializing in high-quality book and packaging projects, Gmund Papier found a partner that values quality and perfection just as much. Since 2019, the company has been producing this elaborate sample book, now in its sixth edition. Thanks to its deep industry knowledge and extensive experience, buchexklusiv has already proven its expertise in creating handmade samples and dummies.
Founder and managing director Peter Kunz is a trained bookbinder himself. With buchexklusiv, he realizes high-quality prints, bindings, and creative concepts in collaboration with a network of 25 specialized production companies across the entire graphic industry.
Peter Kunz serves as the central contact for Gmund Papier, overseeing all production steps and ensuring seamless communication. From pre-sorting the paper to printing and bookbinding, every detail is precisely coordinated and monitored at partner facilities. This meticulous attention to detail is reflected in every single Gmund Alles tool. Due to its thickness, special binding, and the versatility of its papers, producing the Gmund Alles tool presents a significant challenge for all involved.
„228 different types of paper are packed in large sheets and sent from Gmund to our printing partner,“ explains Peter Kunz. „These must first be arranged in the correct production and printing order. The pre-sorting of the individual paper types is done manually.“
The sheets are then printed in offset, in either silver or black, depending on the color, and trimmed. The printed sheets are then assembled by a bookbinder into up to seven partial blocks, following a precise sequencing pattern. „An essential step,“ Peter Kunz emphasizes, „is the continuous quality control of each partial block—both through manual pagination and by weighing them.“
The partial blocks are then manually combined into the complete tool and sent to a master bookbinder for further processing. Here, the papers are pressed, trimmed again, and carefully glued on the spine using a special adhesive. This elaborate, multi-step process concludes with a final quality check of each individual Gmund Alles tool after the final trimming. „We have never received a single complaint about the durability of the product,“ Peter Kunz proudly states.
Initially, there were many questions and concerns regarding the stability of this unique binding. From the very beginning, Gmund set specific requirements for how many page-turn cycles each paper type and thickness must withstand. These standards continue to be rigorously tested.
A Commitment to Sustainable Production
Sustainable production also plays a key role in manufacturing the Gmund Alles sample books. Leftover sheets from previous productions are stored for reuse. This means that Gmund Alles tools that have already been assembled but not yet bound can be repurposed for future editions. New papers are then carefully inserted by hand. Thanks to the expertise of Peter Kunz and the buchexklusiv network, the optimal production process for the Gmund Alles tool has been developed.
