Paper Format and Grain Direction: How Are They Related?

The roll width is the basis for all paper formats. Gmund typically produces rolls with a width of 70 cm, and for white papers, often also rolls with 100 cm width. Paper sheets are cut from these rolls.

From 70 cm rolls, the format 70 x 100 cm is produced in the Short Grain (SB) direction, while from 100 cm rolls, the format 100 x 70 cm is produced in the Long Grain (BB) direction.

Short Grain (SB) and Long Grain (BB) describe the grain direction of the paper. This is the direction in which the paper fibers are aligned during the manufacturing process. In the Short Grain direction, fibers are aligned with the long side of the sheet; in the Long Grain direction, they are aligned with the short side. The grain direction has significant effects on the properties and behavior of the paper. With the grain direction, the paper is softer and more flexible, making it easier to fold and process. Against the grain direction, the fibers are stiffer and more prone to breaking.

77 Paper Textures – Our Embossing Rolls Are Our Greatest Treasure

The paper rolls stored in 50 colors can be embossed with 77 different textures. Depending on the combination of color and texture, papers with various characters and effects are created. This offers an incredible range of design possibilities for your brand and paper project.

The embossing is applied to the paper through pressure and often additional hot steam. Our embossing rolls are made from solid steel; the design is engraved into a copper layer and then chrome-plated. Our rolls are solid and durable, with some being over 100 years old.

We regularly expand our range with new designs. For example, embossing roll 909, inspired by a salt lake in South America, or the Mega Linen embossing 908 – it creates a stunning texture through extreme embossing depth. Also new are our fine patterns from rolls 905, 906, and 907.

Color, Embossing, and Finally – Gloss

For each of the 50 base colors, there is a unique recipe for the metallic coating. Whether it’s a minimalistic look with few pigments (BR95), classic gold (BR12) or silver (BR72), festive red with golden glitter (BR92), spring-like shiny yellow (BR31), and more!

Here, we add shine to Gmund paper. How we do it is our secret, a technique invented by Ludwig Kohler in 1974.
Just a hint: It involves light calculation, as only Gmund enhances embossed papers with metallic pigments, allowing light to refract at many different angles. It also comes down to the sheer amount of high-quality pigments we use. And, not least, it’s our experience combined with a constant drive to improve.

And it’s all C2C Silver certified! It doesn’t get better than that!
